When Mother's Day Goes Awry - NAM EthnoBlog

Big Brother Roland called today to see what my plans were for Mother’s Day and to ask if I wanted to join him and his family in case the children were not with me this day. He is always looking out for me and invites me every year.

I declined, as always, because I will be writing (and buying an iPhone). A sudden burst of inspiration and opportunity has me writing constantly these days, even in my dreams.

However, it does feel strange to realize that this will be the first time ever that I will not be able to be with my children for Mother’s Day. Their dad wanted to take them somewhere this weekend. No, it did not make much sense to me either, but we have this fight every year.

UCLA's Association of Chinese Americans (ACA)'s Chinese American Culture Night (CACN): Vincent Chin story

From UCLA's Association of Chinese Americans (ACA)'s Chinese American Cultural Night on May 12, 2012: To feature the story of Vincent Chin:
Chinese American Culture Night (CACN) is an annual stage production hosted by the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) at UCLA. Held in world-famous Royce Hall every spring, the show features performances by Lion Dance, Traditional Dance, Hip Hop, and guest singers (this year we will feature Youtube star ClaraC), as well as a drama highlighting the issues facing the Chinese American community.
This year we present the story of Vincent Chin, whose death sparked the first pan-Asian movement across the country. The injustice surrounding his beating and the subsequent trial illustrated the necessity for large-scale community activism, and continues to be a defining moment in Chinese American history, even as we approach the 30th anniversary of his death.
Now in our 23rd year, CACN continues to educate the greater community on issues that directly affect us all, and to promote Chinese American cultural awareness on and beyond the UCLA campus.

APAP: Vincent Chin 30: Standing Up Then and Now

From Curtis Chin and the good folks at Asian Pacific Americans for Progress:
Please join Asian Pacific Americans for Progress and our local partners for a nationwide Google Hangout* with leading civil rights leaders from around the country.
Saturday, June 23, 20122 pm EST/11 am PST/8 am HST Viewing parties across the country
In 1982, Vincent Chin was the victim of a hate crime murder in Detroit. Thirty years later, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to face discrimination and bullying. In fact, more than half of Asian Americans report being bullied in the high school class room, the highest of any racial group. In light of recent tragedies like the suicide of Pvt. Danny Chen and the continuing effects of 9/11, what can Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders do to stand up against racism and discrimination?
On the 30th anniversary of Vincent's death, please join us for a one-hour panel discussion with leading voices from the nonprofit, legal and judicial communities as we address these timely issues.
Viewing Parties in over 20 citiesSo far, we have commitments for viewing parties in over twenty cities. Participating cities include:Albany * Atlanta * Austin * Boston * Chicago * Cleveland * Denver * Detroit * Houston * Los Angeles * Lowell, MA * Minneapolis * Morgantown, WV * New York * Philadelphia * Raleigh * Sacramento * San Francisco * Seattle * Washington, DC * Wichita and more
